Claustrophobic washes of sub bass lull us into the new album Drone Music 2 from Scottish electronic producer Daniel Herd. Slowly developing into a chime-led dirge the introduction pulls us through field recordings and slow churn acoustics fizzing out into a wildly expansive 15 track album of atmospherics, swirling textures and meditative drones.
Servicing both listeners who want to concentrate deeply on sound-design specifics, motives and elements within as well as listeners who prefer to let sounds exist without too much inspection, instead opting to let the experience wash over them. Take a step into the vast soundscapes of Drone Music 2 and find yourself meandering between gritty experimental urban backstreets, and brooding post-apocalyptic landscapes.
The album as a whole is interspersed with delightful moments of rhythmic clarity. For example, the hypnotic slow-burn of Wing Attack Plan R rounds out a particularly dark and musty section. The string-led garage breaks of Mistaken Identity send us head long into pipe drone territory.
On the whole, the full hour and twenty minutes are a truly cinematic trip and a hugely rewarding listen.
